81 million children in Latin America and the Caribbean live in poverty.

  • Extreme poverty in Latin America has reached its worst level in 20 years due to the coronavirus pandemic, a report by the UN said March 4, 2021.

  • Poverty is also at its highest level in 12 years after the number of poor people in the region rose by 22 million in 2020 to 209 million.(Source: ECLAC, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean)

1 in 5 children under five are not growing well due to malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • The State of the World’s Children 2019 report finds that in 2018, almost 1 in 5 children under five in Latin America and the Caribbean were either stunted, wasted or overweight, or a combination of two of these.

  • These trends reflect poor growth, and putting children at risk of increased infections, weak learning skills, low immunity and, in many cases, death. Almost 4 in 10 children under five in the region suffered from deficiencies in vitamins and minerals such as iron and iodine, further undermining their growth. Of the 18 countries in the region with data, Guatemala is the worst off with 1 in 2 children under 5 not growing well. “
