Declutter challenge - Day 5

Clutter Challenge (1).jpg

Have I mentioned how glad I am to have a good 20-Day step by step plan to declutter? Now today is day five but not technically day five. I decided to only post on the days I’m on the air. It just makes it a little easier.

DAY FIVE - DO A ONE-ROOM RESET

Yes, the day five challenge from  Apartment Therapy is to do a one-room reset in your home! What is a one-room reset?

Declutter coach extraordinaire, Taryn Williford gave the example of how when we are driving and maybe near our destination or trying to find it - like reading addresses - we kind of turn down the radio. It isn’t that the quiet helps us see better. It eliminates distractions. This is the same thing we will do with the one-room reset. We are going to eliminate some distractions that clutter can cause.

So our assignment is to pick a room that we frequently use (Taryn even suggested a space if you don’t want to dive all the way in just yet) and grab a box to do some removal of tchotchkes, decorative things, and anything that is not essential to the room. These items are not for the Sell, Donate, or Maybe boxes. We are just clearing out space for a clean slate. Keep only the essentials for the room. A newly cleared out room is also an excellent opportunity for a good old fashioned clean! Next, live with this blank canvas for a week or longer and slowly bring items back in. You might find you are much happier with a simpler room. You may decide to put half of the items back in. Who knows? The cool thing is you can add items back in like an artist painting a picture.

Don’t forget you can still sign up for the declutter cure at Apartment Therapy.
