Let’s catch up - Week of November 8 (cough & cold home remedies)
It’s been a while since we just caught up together on the blog!
I have been hearing a lot of coughing and some sneezing lately and thought it was time for us to talk about home remedies for exactly that. I reached out via Facebook and got some nice answers. I’ve got a mix of my family and yours below. Feel free to email me if you have any you want to add. Let’s help each other out this season! Email me at this link.
First here are my family’s home remedies and some I picked up from friends.
Sore scratchy throat -
Plain potato chips have been shared with me by numerous people as a way to ease and coat a sore throat. My friend Therese also recommends hot chocolate to coat the throat. Both are very yummy!
Cough & sore throat -
Lisa recommended a cup of hot water with lemon, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. It seems like honey is always a good go to remedy.
A variety of symptoms & prevention -
Amanda gave a lot of remedies. One involved cutting up an onion and rubbing it on your feet. Don’t pass on it too soon, because I looked it up and read that chopping up onions and putting them in your socks at bedtime and wearing them overnight.
She also shared swallowing a small garlic clove three times a day. My family swears by garlic for colds though we make lots of garlic bread instead.
OH! I also read that cutting up an onion can also calm down a cough. Maybe you cry so much your brain turns the cough signal down (I don’t know, but that sounds good).
Janet shared a remedy that she uses which is kind of like a soup broth. She raised her daughter on it. Basically, she makes a tea out of lemon & lime, onion, garlic cloves (3), a little red pepper, and a little salt and pepper. She heats it all up together. Strains it and drinks the liquid. So kind of soupish (I don’t think that is a word). Janet says she is diabetic so she always uses this home remedy.
My friend Lisa recommends eucalyptus plant sprigs in her shower to help her breathe easier.
NEW EDIT - Last night my son woke me up to the sound of him hacking! I thought he was choking. Turned out to be a terrible cough. So I reached into my home remedy memory and remembered one I forgot to share with you. Horehound tea! I used to make this all the time in Arizona when I could even grab horehound from the backyard, but you can buy the herb dried too. I bought a big bag of it online. Add two teaspoons of the dried horehound to hot water, let it brew for a few minutes, strain, and drink with honey. This tea slashes coughs! I gave him two cups and he was all set for work.
